2008 Season
at Carron Valley
Carron Valley Report 15th Sept 08
The water has
continued to fish extremely well recently with most action on
the top or just under the surface. The most successful flies in
recent weeks have been Bibio, Kate MacLaren, D’ Bach and Loch
Ordie, the first two more so in snatcher form. On the sunnier or
colder days white cats have worked well however most fish are
being taken right on the surface and extremely close to the
bank.
A few entries
from the catch return book as follows:
Mr Marshall &
Mr Wallace, Cumbernauld – 10 for 23lb 7oz + 4 returned
Mr Middlemass,
Mid Calder – 3 for 5lb + 40 returned
Thack A C – 34
for 67lb + 7 returned
R Kenning / A

Special
mention to Mr Moir from Stirling who landed one of the nicest
Brown Trout we’ve seen at Carron. It weighed 5lb 13oz which,
although certainly not the largest, was an absolute cracker ....

Fishing has
been excellent over the last few weeks despite the heavy rain
and some really nice bags as well as individual fish have been
caught. The most prolific fly recently has been a Bibio,
followed closely by Kate MacLaren and Loch Ordie.
The recent
heavy downpours have brought the loch back up a few feet and
exposed a lot of natural feeding, bringing on some excellent
rises.
Some recent
catches
Townhill AC –
23 for 43lb 1oz + 5 returned
R McConachie –
57 all returned
Central
Scotland Police – 18 for 46lb 3oz + 11 returned
SANA Youth –
75 for 143lb 9oz + 21 returned. Largest fish 8lb 1.5oz – Grant
Osler
Some other
notable fish
Bill Holleran,
Bo’ness – 9lb Blue

Again we’ve
seen some good catches over the last week or so with most fish
being taken on dries, buzzers and sedgehogs in the evening
sessions and a mixture of nearly everything during the day
sessions. The warmer weather has brought some terrific rises,
mainly in the evenings although some day sessions have shown
great rises when the weather has been favourable.
We’ve seen a
whole load of blues coming off to both the anglers and the
Ospreys, as well as a fair number of double figure rainbows.
Some recent
catches include;
Gartmore AC –
24 for 45lb 10oz + 25 returned (biggest 10lb)
Bill Holleran
has returned 43 fish over two outings
D McAlpine –
36 all returned
Mr Brunton &
Mr Mason – 8 for 18lb 4oz + 17 returned
Scottish Fire
& Rescue – 38 for 75lb 1oz +12 returned
Special
mention to Mrs Sinclair from Glasgow who landed a lovely 9lb 4
oz fish on her second outing this year.

After a
slightly quieter spell the recent weather seems to have flicked
the switch back on with some great catches over the last week or
so. Dries and buzzers seem to be the order of the day when cloud
cover is good, while traditionals (Kate MacLaren, Diawl Bach)
and mini lures (Carron Rabbit, Viva, Ace of Spades etc.) are
working well when the sun is out. The bigger catches of Rainbows
seem to be coming on day sessions while the Browns are out in
force in the evenings.
Some recent
catches:
SANA Youth
team – 28 for 49lb 2oz + 39 returned
Thack A C- 30
for 63lb
Falkirk FD –
30 for 52lb + 4 returned
I Wallace / G
Annal – 10 for 19lb 3oz + 7 returned
Bank anglers
are also doing very well at the moment as the following two
examples show.
P Rae Kilsyth
– 9, all returned
R Fitzpatrick
Kilsyth – 3 for 5lb 8oz + 10 returned

The recent
spell of weather has brought some great hatches and even better
rises to Carron over the last week and we’ve also seen large
numbers of mayfly appearing which is a first for us.
Even in the
bright sunshine and flat calm during the day, plenty of fish are
coming off to those going down for them and in the evenings most
sport is to be found on the surface with some great dry fly
fishing on the warm evenings.
Congratulations to Mr J Fotheringham from Stenhousemuir who
landed the biggest fish this week (and this season so far) at
11lb 11oz (see photograph below).
Also
congratulations to Campbell Morgan and Donald Forbes who won the
Scierra pairs and to Steve Welsh, Rob Denson, Tom Graham and
George Leishman who all qualified.
Some of this
week's catches include:
S & G
Robinson, Newcastle – 10 for 20lb 10oz + 14 returned
Mr McFarlane &
Mr Grant, Bothwell – 9 for 17lb 4oz + 10 returned

Municipal AC – 33 for 56lb 8oz + 8 returned

An 11lbs 11 oz Carron rainbow trout
for Mr J Fotheringham of Stenhousemuir

The fishing
over the last few weeks has again continued to be first class
with a mixture of large bags and large fish.
The recent
weather has seen a huge increase in surface activity and some of
the rises seen here over the last few weeks have been nothing
short of spectacular. In the evenings fishing dries seems to be
the answer and cdc’s, Loch Ordie and snatchers have all done
well throughout the day.
A few mentions
from the last week:
Mr Stevens & Mr
Macleod, Cumbernauld – 16 all returned. Richard Kenning, Mallaig
– 3 for 6lb + 16 returned. D Forbes, P Batchelor – 5 for 16lb
2oz + 12 returned (biggest 8lb 8oz). J Patrick jnr & J Patrick
Snr, Kilsyth – 10 for 18lb 4oz + 26 returned. G Sloan & N
McNeil, Kilmarnock – 10 for 18lb +19 returned. Largest fish of
the week was Kenny Scott from Earlston A.C with a 9lb 2oz
Rainbow.
Day two of the
World team selection saw 21 anglers take 280 fish.
On this note
I’d like to congratulate Calum Crosbie, Willie Leach, Jim
Lister, Donald Forbes, Davy Chalmers and Simon Cocker on their
performance over the 4 days and winning their places on the
team. Not only a great bunch of guys but as good a team as
you’ll get.

The first two
weeks of May have seen some tremendous sport with no let up in
the quantity of fish being caught. Dries and buzzers are working
very well especially in the evening sessions and the bright
sunshine we’ve had of late hasn’t put the fish off at all. Water
temp is up and some decent hatches have produced some great
rises and top of the water sport.
The majority
of anglers have had large catches and while it’s impossible to
list them all a few examples are shown below.
D Kelly / A
Deans – 12 for 28lb 7oz + 15 returned

Leach – 23 all returned
R Guthrie – 3
for 6lb 4oz + 19 returned

14th April 08.
This week has
seen yet another fantastic week with some superb catches being
recorded despite the cold conditions. Top angler on Saturday was
John Thomson from Falkirk, fishing from the bank he kept one
Rainbow for 6.5 lbs and stopped counting his returns when he
reached 40, all on size 14 flies and a floating line no less.
Bitter cold conditions and bright sunshine certainly hasn’t put
the fishing off in any way whatsoever as seen in a sample of
this weeks catches below.

Despite the
freezing cold conditions and driving snow we’ve seen recently
the fishing has continued to be absolutely superb at Carron with
most anglers getting their limit and more. Many of the fish
caught have been larger and some overwintered, all in fabulous
condition.
A special
mention to Mr B Paton from Kilsyth who managed to land a 6.5lb
Blue trout on only the second time he’s held a fishing rod. Two
friends he was fishing with scored extremely well also. John
Wilson landed a 9lb rainbow while his mate Matt Angus landed a
4lb 7oz wild brown trout.

recent catches:
Grizzlecats AC

If
you think this
fish may not look 9 lbs ... you really need to see the size of Mr
