  CARRON VALLEY FISHERY NEWS

LATEST NEWS

14th April 08.

This week has seen yet another fantastic week with some superb catches being recorded despite the cold conditions. Top angler on Saturday was John Thomson from Falkirk, fishing from the bank he kept one Rainbow for 6.5 lbs and stopped counting his returns when he reached 40, all on size 14 flies and a floating line no less. Bitter cold conditions and bright sunshine certainly hasn’t put the fishing off in any way whatsoever as seen in a sample of this weeks catches below.

J Patrick – 4 for 23lb 14oz. 1 at 9lb 10oz & 1 at 9lb 7oz

G McGregor / A Daisley – 34 all returned

J McGonagle – 6 for 17lb 5oz. 1 at 8lb 12oz

R Ambrose – 12 for 26lb 8oz + 11 returned

R Robertson – 3 for 12lb

A Brock – 17, all returned

R McLay – 5 for 8lb 6oz+ 9 returned

Grangemouth AC – 35 for 81 lb 6oz

Despite the freezing cold conditions and driving snow we’ve seen recently the fishing has continued to be absolutely superb at Carron with most anglers getting their limit and more. Many of the fish caught have been larger and some overwintered, all in fabulous condition.

A special mention to Mr B Paton from Kilsyth who managed to land a 6.5lb Blue trout on only the second time he’s held a fishing rod. Two friends he was fishing with scored extremely well also. John Wilson landed a 9lb rainbow while his mate Matt Angus landed a 4lb 7oz wild brown trout.

Some other recent catches:

Grizzlecats AC – 68 for 129lb 6oz + 57 returned

A Donaghy – 3 for 8lb 4oz + 24 returned

E Clark/K Thom – 10 for 19lb + 4 returned

A Brock – 17, all returned

I Skilling – 5 for 9lb 6oz + 17 returned

M Low / R Gilbert – 10 for 18lb 7oz + 17 returned

For bookings please tell 01324 823698

The End of Another Great Season on Carron

Today brings the end of another season at Carron and I would like to take this opportunity and use this forum to thank everyone who has fished here this season.

We have had a fantastic response to the new stocking policy and the quality of the fish and it's fair to say the feedback we've received from anglers this year has all been very positive.

I'm delighted to say that Carron has fished exceptionally well all season and from what I've learned this season and our future stocking policy, next season promises to be even better.

Next year we'll be open from Sat 15th March through to Friday 31st October.

I hope you all have an enjoyable time over the winter and look forward to seeing you again next year. We can be contacted by phone or e mail over the closed season for 2008 bookings.

Many thanks again,

Fraser

Carron Valley Fishing Report – August 2007.

August has continued as before with Carron still fishing superbly. Even although water temp is up fantastic catches are still being caught on dries. Over the last few weeks daddies, hoppers, muddlers, buzzers are all doing the business extremely well. Sparklers and blobs appear best on the colder days we’ve had.

The bank anglers are having a ball with almost all getting their limits early on then fishing C&R for the remainder of the day.

Not much more can be said so on to some recent catches.

J Davis – 6 for 24lb 4oz with the biggest fish in August at 10lb 12oz plus 5 returned

J Robertson, H Tolan, Auchterarder – 12 for 23lb & 4 returned

D Walker, Cumbernauld – 6 for 22lb & 7 returned

R Gilbert, Kilmarnock – 12 for 22lb 4oz & 6 returned

M McCreadie, M Ray – 12 for 27lb 7oz & 12 returned

WLFD AC – 26 for 46lbs & 50 returned

Hedgehogs AC – 22 for 45lb 11oz

RAF Northern League – 40 for 66lb 3oz & 16 returned

Largs AC – 35 for 60lb

Early indications show September looking even better.

Carron Valley Fishing Report – July 2007.

July has yet again seen some excellent sport at Carron Valley, many large bags taken, with the majority of fish being caught on hoppers, muddlers, daddies and various dry flies.

Fishing reports generally concentrate on the numbers of fish caught, and while we continue to have an extremely high average per angler (see below) what we often miss out on is the quality of the fish. The one constant since we opened this season has been the comments received from anglers about the quality of the trout we stock, with many anglers saying they are the best quality trout they’ve caught anywhere.

I have copied below an extract from an e mail received on Tuesday this week from a gentleman who almost never fishes for anything other than wild fish.

Hi Fraser,

Just wanted to say how impressed I was today by the quality of your rainbow trout...... the most perfect rainbow trout I have caught anywhere. At just under two pounds, silver as a sea trout, full tail and fins, firm, muscular and fighting fit, as close as you'll get to the real thing outside North America. I only wish I had had the camera with me....

John

Some July catches:

R Stanovitch – 6 for 13lb 8oz

Newton Stewart AC – 19 RT for 41lb & 13 BT for 7.5lb + 13 returned

B Turpie & R McKinlay – 12 for 23lb 6oz & 17 returned

Mr McNeil – 6 for 14lb 8oz & 7 returned

Aberdour A C – 20 RT for  43lb & 3 BT for 3lb + 60+ returned

S Montgomery – 9 for 18lb 10 oz + 12 returned

J Dunbar (3 in boat) – 18 for 54 lb + 11 returned (largest fish 11 lb 6 oz)

Lochinch AC – 28 for 55lb 10 oz + 15 returned

John (Smeato) Smeaton with a 4lb 7oz Blue

Carron Valley Reservoir – Fishing Report 30th June 2007.

Carron Valley is still continuing to fish superbly, although there was a bit of a blip for a few days with the thunder and lightning we had recently which put the fish down. However they are now back on form and on the top.

We’ve seen some fabulous dry sport with daddies and black & olive hoppers working extremely well.

The bank anglers are doing equally well if not better and one angler, David Taddie from Edinburgh, reckons he had the best day's fishing ever with 35 from the bank.

B Baith had 8 for 16.5lb

Newton Stewart AC 19 rainbow trout for 41lb & 13 brown trout for 7.5lb

Clydesdale Bank had 45 fish (no weight recorded)

Mr Sturrock & Mr Chalmers from Paisley had 12 rainbow trout for 28lb 3oz plus 4 returned, and 7 brown trout, all returned.

To name a few.

We were also delighted to host a friendly competition between some of the Scottish adult and Scottish youth teams which saw 51 fish for 77lb and 27 returned in difficult conditions.

Last but not least Jim Martin from Kilsyth won our bottle of malt for a cracking rainbow which hit the scales at 11 lb 8 oz.

Carron Valley Reservoir – Fishing Report 7th June 2007.

Thought I would post some recent news on how the fishing’s going but firstly I’d like to thank everyone for their kind comments over the last few weeks & months.

There’s no let up at all on both the quality and the quantity of fishing at the moment regardless of conditions.

As with all fishing you just need to tweak your methods to suit the weather, time of day etc. In summary, the best flies over the last few weeks have been: black pennell, green tailed Kate, hare’s ear, claret muddler, black hoppers, numerous buzzers, loch Ordie, yellow dancer and blae & black. As I’m sure many of the guys on here will know others are working just as well, however these seem to be the favourites over the last few weeks.

The rise tonight had to be seen to be believed….almost as if someone had turned the gas on under the water. One bank angler (R Gordon, Alloa) had 14, mainly on dry’s and particularly a size 14 loch Ordie & size 16 black spider.

I’ve posted some recent excerpts from the catch returns.

Mr McGinley                                        6 for 11lb 7oz & 15 returned

Bell / Templeton                                  12 for 26lb 13oz & 3 returned

W Leach / J Crawford                           10 for 23lb & 20 returned

RASC                                                 31 for 45lb 8oz & 11 returned

M Ward / G Parker                               46 All returned

Kelvinside A C                                     35 for 68lb 8oz (RT) & 4 for 4lb 4oz (BT)

Tempo                                                37 for 84lb 11oz & 21 returned

M Low / R Gilbert                                10 for 20lb 4 oz

R Fitzpatrick                                        6 for 11lb 8oz

Mr McGlone                                         7 for 13lb & 12 returned

SPRA                                                 59 for 111 lb (RT) & 13 for 13lb (BT)

Wilkinson`                                           12 for 20lb 4oz & 3 returned

None of the really big fish we have put in have so far come out although I was told today that someone had a 15lber (approx) on Monday and had to put it back as they already had their limit. Largest Rainbow off so far has been 9lb 2oz, largest Brown trout has been 8lb. Biggest over the last few days was a 5lb 2oz rainbow taken by Charlie Rankin.

Final thought – There’s a bottle of malt for the first angler who has a fish in double figures.

Carron Valley Reservoir – Fishing Report 21st May 2007

Fishing has been superb lately and yet again we have seen some record catches coming off, mainly to traditional wets although some have had success with dries when the conditions have been right. The evening sessions are showing some really good rises now and water temperature is on the increase.

Again Jim Quigley from Fintry gets himself into Carron Valley's records with the largest brown trout at 8lb while J Bell from Kilmarnock had a nice rainbow at 9lb although still half the size of some of the fish recently stocked.

Inverkeithing farmers had 23 for 45lb 6oz including a brownie at 4 and a half pounds.

A Donnelly & J Banks (Glasgow) kept 12 for 27lb and stopped counting after 30 returns. J Buchanan (Gargunnock), 19 all returned. K Doig & N Burns kept 4 for 8lb 8oz and returned another 42.

R McMaster fishing from the bank had 3 for 12lb 4oz and returned 14.

Carron Valley Reservoir – Fishing Report 22nd April 2007

The first two weeks of 2007 have seen some tremendous sport as well as some record catches. Black Pennel and hare's lug seem to be the top flies over the last two weeks. Michael Low from East Kilbride had 6 fish for 19.5 lb and returned another 17. He currently holds the record for the biggest fish this year tipping the scales at 9lb (see picture below).  As well as some bumper rainbows we’ve seen 14 Brownies in excess of 4lb caught so far, the largest of which was caught by the chairman of Milngavie AC and weighed 4lb 11oz, pictured below.

Other notable bags have been:

R Gilbert (Thack) - 6 for 19lb and 14 returned. Campbell Morgan 6 for 11.5lb and 11 returned. J Campbell Cumbernauld 20 all returned. J Quigley, Fintry - 24, all returned. Mr Quigley also claims the accolade of being the first person ever to catch a Rainbow Trout at Carron. W Leach & D Paterson had 8 for 17lb 10oz and returned a further 15. D Steele 6 for 23lb 4oz and 10 returned.

A lovely Brownie being returned

CARRON VALLEY FISHERY LTD - PRESS RELEASE  March 2007

Carron Valley Fishery announce new stocking policy for 2007 season and beyond.

With effect from March 2007 Carron Valley reservoir, managed by Carron Valley Fishery Ltd, will begin a policy of stocking Rainbow Trout in addition to the current stocking policy of Brown Trout.

The current management have strived to maintain a Brown Trout fishery for the last three seasons. However continuing trends & customer demand clearly indicate that a brown trout fishery of this nature is not financially viable, and that, in order to maintain this amenity to the angling public, it has been necessary to introduce the new stocking policy.

After discussions with many of their regular anglers and clubs, the management then went into further consultation with various organisations to assess both the environmental implications and viability from the anglers' perspective.

The new policy should appeal to a wider range of anglers who enjoy traditional wild Brown Trout sport as well as the opportunity to hook up with hard fighting Rainbow Trout.
